NHL players will soon be paying $6.9 million to $7 million per year to promote their teams through the Internet.
This is the largest price increase in NHL advertising for three decades.
The average NHL player is making $1,250 per year, according to the league.
The league will begin a nationwide campaign to reach more fans and create new business opportunities, the league announced.
The NHLPA said it will also provide a “direct debit” program for players to offset some of the additional costs.
The average NHLer will make $1.934 million over the next five years, or $3.1 million more than last year.
The league said the average player’s pay will rise to $2.5 million.
The NHL’s advertising budget is expected to be $2 billion this season, which is higher than the $1 billion in 2011-12 and $1 million in 2012-13.
The new revenue from advertising will cover a variety of things from player salaries, to player travel, player merchandise and more.
